Which Dog Car Harness is Safest For Your Dog
A dog car harness or dog seat belt should be a high priority on the shopping list for essential dog supplies for any dog owner who wants to take their dog out in the car and keep them safe and secure.
With so many brands of dog car harness to choose from and not all of them being that good, it is important to know what features you should be looking for, in order to get the best for your dog.
Here in the U.K. I recently visited a large national pet superstore to see what they had in the way of dog seat belts and harnesses as my westie needed a new one. I was disappointed to find they only had one type available which was their own brand, no display model for me to have a good look at and certainly no help from the young cashier when I enquired about the dog seat belt they had.
In the end I went online and read various product reviews, compared products and after a few hours, eventually ordered a dog car harness for my dog, which he’s been happily using for a few weeks now.
To make it easier for you to choose the safest dog seat belt or harness, these are the features you should be looking for:
1. Make sure the dog seat belt is made out of actual seat belt webbing and that the webbing is about the same width as your car seat belt. This is the most important factor, as the product needs to be strong and durable.
2. Look for padding in the harness chest area and good coverage – I noticed some of the harnesses had a very thin strap that went up the middle of the dog’s chest, avoid those types as they will not give much protection and a thin strap can easily twist and cut in. So padding is good for protection and comfort.
3. If you have a small dog who likes to look out the window and you want to be able to use the dog car harness with a dog car seat lookout, you’ll need to make sure that the dog seat belt strap can be attached through the loop. Some models I looked at didn’t allow for this. For long car journeys I always put my dog’s bed in the back of the car to act as a dog car seat so he can either snuggle up and sleep or stand up and look out.
4. Look for a dog car harness that scores 4 or 5 star, after all this is a safety item you are buying and it needs to be 100% reliable.
