I was wondering… saddle fittings? Seat size? Gullet size?
So the gullet sizes come in narrow, regular/average, wide, X-wide and all the rest in between. And the seat size is when it says 16″ or 17.5″ etc. The owner of my soon-to-be pony told us that she’s in a 17″ saddle but surely the gullet size is for the horse and the inches is the seat size to fit the rider? Am i wrong? For example, as long as the horse had the right gullet size, would the seat size matter for the horse or does the seat size only effect the rider?
I don’t know what seat size i fit in to, is there any way of finding out? I don’t have access to any saddles to try and we don’t have the kind of tack shops that have tack in store where i am. This is my first pony so all of the lesson ponies and my old share already had saddles that fitted and i didn’t have to worry. I’m 5ft3 and petite if that helps? What would be a safe seat size to choose? 16.5″ or 17″?
English saddles by the way 
Unfortunately, saddle sizes aren’t exactly standard! Therefore, every time you switch saddle makers you will get a different gullet width even if they are labelled the same size and the same with seat sizes. Unfortunately, the only way to know whether the saddle is properly fitting your pony is to take your horse and your saddle to a saddle fitter!
Similarly, the only way to know that the saddle is going to fit you is for you to sit in the saddle (which you should be able to do comfortably in both a sitting and gallop position – sitting you should be able to fit about the width of your four fingers front and back).
While this is sometimes hard to find – it’s the only real way to know that you have the right size of seat and gullet in the saddle maker. Because the fit of the saddle is so important for you (for comfort) and for your horse (for his/her comfort, health, performance, etc.) I would very strongly suggest that you put in the time and effort to make sure that you, your saddle and your horse are all working together smoothly!
