Am buildin a still need help with a few things, like plumbing, and a spot of electronics?
I need to know what would make a good food safe removable seal at 80 degrees,
plus how to drill holes in thin steel and copper to my desired size, how could i put a compartment one third down a 2″ (mabie 3″) wide copper pipe that would hold some brass wool in place,
would a chefs blow torch melt silver solder on a copper pipe
i may use an element from a towel rack or even a soldering iron to heat the boiler, whats best to keep something hot but not quite boiling (mabie 2 or 1 an a halflitres capacity) and how can i attach it to the boiler without leeks or electric shocks? is araldite good for that?
If it’s a relatively large hole I would recommend starting with a small hole and cutting the rest out with snips (for a 1 1/2″ or 2″ hole etc).
As for the chef’s blowtorch it could melt the solder if you were very careless with it but with liquid being in the vessel it would not reach the melting point of the solder. So don’t let it boil dry. As a last resort, if the still is made of copper you could attach it to the still using ribbon, etc and lag the whole thing so that it heats the still and not the air. That’s how I used to heat my glass demijohns when I made wine.
As it’s a food product I wouldn’t recommend araldite. This can leach into the liquid. I would use a screwed boss soldered into the pipe and use an element with the corresponding thread, using PTFE thread tape to seal the thread.
It’s dangerous, but then you’re probably old enough to know that. Remember to allow the very first droplets of alcohol to go down the drain as this is poisonous. I don’t know why it’s just what I’ve heard.
