new 2010 Honda Fit, oil change interval?

i have a 2010 honda fit w/ around 5k miles on it at this point. the car tells me i have 50% oil life left, which i assume means i have some time to go before it tells me i need an oil change.

i’m used to changing the oil every 3k miles or so. is it safe to list to the car’s advice as to when it needs an oil change?

Don’t try to out-think the engineers, they put the oil monitor in for a reason. Sure, you can change your oil according to 1950s mythology, but you’d be wasting your money. Doing the basic maintenance as recommended by the engineers will still get 300k out of your Honda — doing extra oil changes may net you 50k more. Hardly seems worth the extra outlay, to me.

Both oil and engines have evolved drastically over the last 60 years, and the engineers have a pretty good idea about what the car really needs, and the car sensors do a good job of monitoring the oil. The manufacturer recommendation is to change the oil when the monitor gets to 15% (but before 0%), and the sensor will combine the oil change with other services, such as tire rotations, so you get one handy reminder and fewer trips to the mechanic.
