2010 Safest Crossover Suv

Small Sedan vs. Small Crossover: Saftey?
I’m turning 17 in a few months so I’m seriously searching for a car now. My parents are dead set on the 2010 Mazda3 or Honda Civic. My issue is: I’ve been driving a 2009 Pilot for the past year and I absolutely love SUV’s, I just feel a lot more safe & comfortable in them than a small car. I would like to get a Nissan Rogue, but my parents are iffy about getting me and SUV (it’s really considered a crossover). I’ve done some research and the difference in mileage is not very big, it’s hardly there. What I would like to know is which is safer? Can someone please give me some legitimate reasons why a small crossover is better than a small sedan? Thanks!
Both types of vehicles can be very safe… just make sure whatever you get has ESC (electronic stability control), and has a 5-star crash rating.
But EVERYTHING else is equal, the small sedan comes out a little bit ahead I think… sedans have a lower center of gravity, making them easier to maneuver to avoid a crash, and less likely to roll over (yes, CUVs probably have a higher driving position, but any advantage in forward visibility that gives you is offset by the likely worse visibility to the rear, which is very important when backing up and parking).
