Suggestions for small sized SUV for a teenager?

Hi, I am planning to get my first car soon and I want a small SUV. I don’t want anything like a Escalade or a Expedition, because those are way too big! I am looking for a SUV that:

1. Is a 5-seater
2. Gives good mileage, fuel efficient (THIS IS A BIG ONE)
3. Less than 25,000 for a new.
4. Safe
5. Small
6. Will last a long time and not give me problems

Examples would be a Toyota RAV4, Ford Escape, and that Volvo SUV. Thanks in advance!

A honda CR-V is a good choice, but the 4-cyl is underpowered – you will find yourself struggling up hills’lack of torque.

toyota venza’s are a good choice, they are pretty much Camry wagons but are NOT INVOLVED IN THE RECALL!!! this makes them a good choice.

Wanna RAV4? they are in the recall and toyota will not sell any to you – you have to wait until late 2010/early 2011 when a facelifted version of the european toyota rav4 comes here.

A Ford escape is a cheap and practical choice, with a strong 4-cyl and light weight.

the chevy equinox (the gmc terrain is too ugly) is sleek, safe, and practical.. Dont expect to get that 32 mpg EPA rating for the equinox, many people i know bought one and say they around 28 mpg hwy.

a subaru outback (the forester has a four-speed, not good enough) is the safest: least body roll (yes its a wagon but its just as big as any of the cars on this list), symmetrical AWD, curtain airbags all the way, side airbags, front and rear, and the rear is the safest of all others on this list since it is the farthest from the rear of the car – a rear end will not do anything but damage the car slightly.

All the above have recieved top safety picks from the IIHS and have a base price around $23,000
