6 Safest Models of Used Cars in Melbourne

Making the best of a dangerous situation

There’s no question that driving is dangerous. Every year thousands of people are killed on our roads … and many of those were the simple victims of another person’s mistake. In a crash situation, the innate characteristics of your car can be the difference between health and serious injury – or more. Safety and value in your Melbourne used car are certainly not incompatible – today we look at the safest models to get you around this car city.

1. Volkswagen Passat GL

The first models of Passat are getting a little long in the tooth now, but the newer incarnations continue to set the same fabulous safety standards that the trailblazer models did. ABS, driver and front passenger airbags, heated power exterior mirrors, pre-tensioners on the seatbelts, and plenty of interior space considering the size of the car are all standard. A nice safe choice of mid-size used car in Melbourne.

2. Holden Astra CDX1

There are plenty of Astras available for purchase in Melbourne’s extensive Car City. They get a 5-star ANCAP safety rating tied to an overall score of 33.5 out of 37, thanks to features like frontal and curtain airbags, ABS brakes, traction control, seatbelt pre-tensioners, fog lamps and an adjustable steering column.

3. Toyota Yaris

These little cars have never quite been taken seriously as used cars in Melbourne … and that’s a great pity for everybody that prefers to drive a little car but needs great safety features! The Toyota Yaris also has a 5-star ANCAP safety rating, with a total score of 34.95 out of 37. The passenger compartment held its shape extremely well in crash tests, and it scored a nearly perfect 15.75 out of 16 in the side impact test. Not all Yaris Melbourne used cars have curtain airbags, they were an optional extra at the factory – check with your car city dealer.

4. Subaru Liberty

5 stars from ANCAP, 35.52 out of 37 overall, and a perfect score in the side impact test make the Liberty an excellent choice of family-sized used car in Melbourne for those who want the best assurance of safety for their kids. One drawback as  far as safety goes is that Liberties don’t have traction control – but they do have extensive airbagging as standard, fog lamps, pre-tensioners and ABS brakes.

5. Volvo S40

Volvos have always been safety leaders in the used cars Melbourne market. The S40 is one of the only car models pre-2005 that had the option of electronic stability control – well worth searching for! Traction control and ABS brakes are standard on these Volvos. They didn’t do as well as some others in the offset and side impact crash tests – but to be fair, they are really designed to avoid rather than survive crashes.

6. Volkswagen Touareg

All 4WDs are certainly not created equal in the safety stakes, and if you have your heart set on being able to go bush on the weekend with your Melbourne used car, the Volkswagen Touareg is your safest choice. Electronic stability control, ABS brakes and traction control are all standard on these models, as well as front, side and curtain airbags.

Convertible Car Seats Can Help Keep Your Child And Your Wallet Safer

When it comes to baby car seats any parent can tell you that infants grow incredibly fast and what may have been just right coming home from the hospital is now cramped and uncomfortable. Many parents who splurge on an infant car seat find themselves searching for a bigger car seat a lot sooner than they ever thought.

If you find yourself looking for a new car seat, consider the advantages of a convertible car seat for your child. As the name implies, this type of car seat can grow with your child and accommodate their changing needs. Rather than spending money for separate infant, toddler and booster seats, it makes sense to buy a convertible car seat that your child can use for each stage of development.

Convertible car seats are designed to protect children from newborn all the way up to 40 pounds or more. At each stage of a child’s development, convertible seats can be placed in different positions. Some models even allow for adjusting the amount of recline. Depending on a child’s age and height and weight, the seat can be rear-facing or forward-facing. It is recommended that a child be kept in the rear facing position for as long as possible, generally from 20 to 35 pounds and at least until they reach 1 year old.

An infant or small toddler should always be placed in the back seat – preferably in the middle seat. If the baby is under 20 pounds or less than one year old, the car seat must be in the rear facing position. Of course, this assumes that the necessary LATCH attachments and/or an appropriate seat belt are available to accommodate the car seat.

Once the child reaches the manufacturer’s recommended weight and height limits, the seats can then be turned to face forward. Once you switch to the forward facing position, it is simply a matter of readjusting the LATCH or seat belt system to anchor the seat. The harness straps can also be adjusted to the right height as your child grows.

The most comfortable and safest convertible car seats are designed with a 5-point harness. The harness straps should be the correct position within the slots for the baby’s height and age. Rear-facing car seats should have the strap at or below the baby’s shoulders. For forward-facing use, the harness straps should located at or just above the child’s shoulders.
