While exercising, is a heart rate of 181 safe for a 40 year old?
Due to an injury, I hadn’t run 3 miles in at least a couple of months. Recently, I got back to the gym and was doing elliptical and such and the heartrate never went above 150.
But today, running on a treadmill, mile 1 I was at 160, mile 2 170, and 180 by the third mile, where I slowed it down a bit as I’d never had a heart rate that high in three years of exercising. I did put on a few pounds while injured and may have a cold virus (my kid does), but is this safe?
Maximum heart rate is estimated by subtracting your age from 220. There is a simple formula for calculating your individual target heart rate (THR), which is 60 to 90 percent of your maximum heart rate (MHR)
for a 40-year-old:
220 – 40 =180 (estimated MHR) 60% of 180 = 108 90% of 180 = 162
For a 40-year-old man or woman to be in their THR zone, their heart must beat between 108 and 162 beats per minute. At this level of exertion, they would be exercising aerobically, burning a lot of fat, and giving their heart-lung system a good workout.
edit: this is from the website below. Don’t worry, you’ll get back in condition soon. I, too, have had to get reconditioned to working out more. Ever since my cat, Kissie, got really ill last October, it’s been one thing after another, and I never got back to my optimum level. It takes some time, but work your way back up. Don’t try to overdo it or push yourself too much at first, and you’ll be fine.
btw, sorry I knew your birthday was in January. Happy Birthday, even if it’s a little late! = )
edit: I just thought of something else to add. Everyone has their own personal maximum heart rate genetically “hardwired”. Our maximum heart rate also decreases approximately one bpm (beat per minute) per year. The average MHR of a teenager is 220 beats per minute, but this may vary +/- 11 beats from the average (209-231 bpm). For example, a 40 year old who would be expected to have a MHR of 180 (220-40) could vary from 169 to 191 for his or her own personal MHR. Going by your history in what you’ve posted on here in the past, 181 seems safe for you, but I would monitor it and not go over that. Of course, if it starts feeling like too much, let up. Like I said, it takes time and patience.
8 arrested in jewelry theft ring that targeted stores in TN
Officials say the high-end burglary ring operated with multiple crews of burglars who would burglarize jewelry stores and pawn shops by cutting holes in the roof, disabling alarms and surveillance systems and using torches to access safes.
