Live or Know in/about Small Towns?
Do you know or live in a small town in the US where it is safe and fun and everyone knows one another, the schools, stores/shops (like the movie theatre, grocery store, antique shops, small girl shops) are real nearby, and it’s where you can just walk into a store/restaurant and the workers will know you, and is it a town which no one really knows that well but is still fun? i would really appreciate it if u can give me the name of the small town and state. thanks!
also please tell me if it’s a good place to live where there’s no violence, it’s not really ghetto (i mean very diverse) and the people are warm and welcoming and if the schools are good. AND if it’s close to a big town to go to places in search for other necessities (like other schools or the mall)
Check out Petal, MS.
www.cityofpetal.com is the cities website, although it doesn’t give very much justice.
www.petalschools.com is the website for the schools. Rated as one of the top schools in MS. Received highest rating level of 5 for last several yrs.
Also known as a “sports illustrated town”
Located next to Hattiesburg. 15-20 minute drive. Hattiesburg is home to the University of Sothern Mississippi. Also know as a retirement community. Malls, shopping, dining, entertainment, all located in Hattiesburg. Hattiesburg’s nickname is “the Hub” because of it’s proximatey to larger cities. New Orleans, The MS gulf coast, Mobile, and Jackson, MS are all less than a 2 hr drive away.
Buying Antiques Online
Antiquing has become a increasingly popular activity. Thanks to the internet, antiquing has also become easier and more accessible. Acquiring an antique piece from another continent is conveniently possible without leaving the comfort of your own home.
There are a variety of places that have antiques for sale online; however, it is important to be careful when going this route. While the Internet does open the door to a world of possibilities when it comes to antiquing, you must know what to look for before making a final purchase. There are just too many scammers out there ready to take advantage of novice antique hunters.
Research
The most important thing you will do is to do your homework. Know the reputation of the company by researching reviews and their processing procedures. If a company will not give you direct contact information so that you can actually talk to them, look the other way. If the company cannot provide you with extra pictures of an antique, move onto the next site.
A reputable company will be more than happy to talk with you and send you detailed pictures of a particular piece. Make sure they send you pictures of the front, back, top, underneath, and inside.
Determine that the company has a refund policy you agree with. If not, do not take the chance. Move on to another company who does have a reasonable policy.
Identify Reproductions
Since you are not able to physically examine the piece, you have to learn other ways to visually identify the item you are interested in. Two options to check for a reproduction is to:
* See any signs of age – There are different things to look for, depending on the antique type you are purchasing. For wooden antiques, like furniture, the wood will shrink over time. You should see cracking, warping and fading. There should also be irregular edges as a handsaw would have been used rather than a power saw. With other antiques, like books or china, age is difficult to determine by a picture. Further investigation and more questions will be required.
* Look for imperfections – This also depends on the type of antique you are purchasing. For furniture, you will want to see a few imperfections. This indicates it is a true antique because a handmade piece of furniture could not be perfect. However, for books and china, you will not want to see imperfections, as this will lower their value.
Regardless of the type of antique you are researching, any reputable seller will provide you with enough information to make an informed decision. If you are just beginning your ventures with antiquing, you may wish to ask an antique expert to help you make a decision on whether a piece is real or fake.
Making the Purchase
Once you have determined that you are sure the item is truly antique, it will be time to make a purchase. Each company will have its own policy and purchasing procedures. However, here are some general tips to making an online purchase:
* Shipping prices. Sellers within your area will have lower shipping costs. In websites like eBay, look for sellers with blanket shipping services (less restrictions for destinations).
* Never use a wire transfer company to pay for a purchase. A wire transfer company is not safe when you are paying someone you don’t know. PayPal seems to be the method of choice for many companies and buyers as they provide protection of the money.
* If you see the phrase “Items are not the seller’s responsibility once dispatched”, do not make the purchase. Either stop the transaction or contact your Chamber of Commerce to determine the rules in your country.
* Read the fine print, read everything! Scammers seem to sneak the catch into the small print that no one likes to read.
Where to Buy Antiques Online
As mentioned, there are many, many sites that sell wonderful antiques. Take the time and steps to be aware and protect the quality of your collection. Here is a list of online sites to consider, but you should still do your own research to determine if they fit yor criteria as a company.
* eBay.com
* caseantiques.com
* showcaseantiques.com
* latique.com
* abaa.com
* antiquesrepublic.com
There are many reputable and respectable companies that sell antiques online. You can purchase items safely as long as you research both the company as well as the antique. Be fully aware of what you want and you too can have an exciting collection from all over.
