Does anyone know who makes the Humvee for the military and how much extra would it cost to armor sufficiently?
I was wondering how much $$ would we have to pay the profit mongers who make a fortune on military contracts to retro fit the current humvee’s in use by the U.S.A. and allies military so they will stand up to attack and save the troops,if we can’t pull them out we might as well make them as safe as our technology allows!
AM General makes the Hum Vee and the cost of making it IED proof can exceed $215,000.000, or more than four times the original per unit cost of the vehicle. Armor is heavy and the vehicle was never designed to carry that kind of weight, so extensive modifications have to be done to the frame and suspension in order to carry the extra weight. This makes them handle differently and shortens the life span of the vehicle fro the normal 2-4 years to as little as nine months.
