Why do baby cribs all have flat spindles? Are the ones with designs not safe in some way?

My husband is going to make our crib… any tips are welcome :)

I’ve seen some with low-profile designs, just make sure they do not stick out enough for the child to get clothing caught on or make a space that the child can get a limb stuck in.
