There are many safe manufacturers in the world today, many of them make top quality safes, others do not. Lets take a look at five of the top US safe manufacturers and why they have earned a good reputation. I have listed them in alphabetical order to avoid any implication of ranking among these companies.
American Security or AMSEC has been around since 1948, and are based out of California. They boast being the world’s leading producer of burglar resistant safes. Indeed, security has been foremost in their designs. They were the first manufacturer of round door vaults, which were harder to break into and were an industry standard for decades. They were also a lot more expensive, so AMSEC went on in the 1960’s to develop a more cost effective square door that offered maximum protection.
Modern day burglary techniques led AMSEC to develop safes in the 1990’s that used composite construction, combining hard plate steel and high strength concrete which offered great protection against attack. WIth their focus on security, AMSEC was the first US company to obtain Underwriters Laboratories highest burglary ratings of TL15 and TL30, and they continue today to be one of the most innovative companies in the market.
Browning is an American company based out of Utah and their primary focus are gun safes. Liberty is a younger company than most of the others, having been established in Utah in 1988, but they grew quickly and by 1994 were the #1 selling full-size residential safe company in America.

In the 1990’s they introduced special HiSecurity Composite Doors which sandwiched layers of fireboard insulation and steel and hardened plate-steel, which increased security and fire protection. Sentry Safe was started during the Great Depression in the 1930’s as the Brush-Punnett Company. They had a simple formula of “quality products and reasonable prices through innovative engineering” that guided the company and allowed it to thrive. They are still a family owned company, led by third generation members of the Brush family, but changed their name to the Sentry Group in 1987. Though based out of New York, they have a global presence, producing more safes and fire resistant chests than any other company in the world.
