How safe is a car seat base?

I just got a car seat with a base but I’ve heard that they aren’t safe to use because in an accident the seat can come off of the base and fly around the car. I got the disney Winnie the Pooh seat and it has a metal bar in the base and metal clips on the seat. Are these metal pieces good enough to hold the seat in place or is it better to not use the base?

Yes, they are safe, or they wouldn’t be able to sell them. You should always make sure the seat is locked into the base, just double check by listening for the ‘click’ and then pulling up to make sure it’s secure. Also, make sure your base is installed tight enough. Always press firmly on the base or kneel on it when tightening the LATCH straps or vehicle seat belt.

7 Tips to help you choose the best car seat

Purchasing a car seat for your child is a significant investment of time, energy, and money. You will be buying a product which will be utilized by your family several times each day for the next five or more years! Knowing that you will be pressing these buckles and locking these clips thousands of times as you secure your child during your travels, you want to ascertain that you buy the seat which suits your needs best.

Here are several tips to keep in mind as you shop for the best safety seat for your precious bundle of joy:

  1. All car seats on the market pass government safety tests, so you cannot make a wrong decision. Many seats have additional convenience features, and will be faster and simpler for you to use; however all of them are safe for traveling.
  2. Be very wary of buying used seats, as most models expire after six or seven years. Additionally, seats that have survived an accident may no longer be rated for use (depending on the type of accident), and you cannot know for sure that a used seat was never involved in a crash.
  3. Rear-facing is safer for children who are between the ages of one and three. Although infants must ride in the rear-facing position until the age of 12 months or the weight of 20 lbs, riding backwards is five times safer for older babies as well. Therefore, look for a convertible seat that has a high weight limit for the rear-facing position.
  4. Note the return policy of your safety seat when making your purchase. Be sure to keep the receipt and box, just in case it is not a good fit for your vehicle or you find it too challenging to use.
  5. A rear-facing seat may never be placed in a front seat position that has a frontal air bag.
  6. Most children will ride in a car seat or booster seat until the age of 8 or the height of 4’9″; however proper seat belt positioning is the most important factor in determining when kids can ride without a safety seat.
  7. Before installing your seat, read both your vehicle manual and the seat’s manual. Occasionally, there are seats that are not compatible with the latches or belts of certain vehicles.

Remember to give driving your full attention! By keeping your focus on the road you will give your baby the safest possible journey. Travel safely with your child!
