Does boiling rain water from my rain bin collector make it alright for my fish tank?
reverse osmosis water (or rain water) is supposed to lower the GH and KH levels in the aquarium. If I take water out of the rain bins we have attatched ot our eaves, strain it and boil it will it be safe for my aquarium?
Other fishkeepers use rainwater all the time to lower the GH and/or KH in their tanks. If you live where you only have hard water, it’s a necessity to breed fish that come from places where the water is soft and slightly acidic. Most won’t even bother to boil it. And rainwater is cheaper then RO.
But one thing you should do, it to wait about 10-15 minutes after the rain has started falling steadily to collect the water. The reason being that all the pollen, bird poop, leaf debris and other stuff that gets blown around needs a chance to wash off your roof.
So if you can, a piece of flexible gutter somewhere between your roof and the collection bin can be added so that the rainfall at the beginning gets diverted to your lawn or garden, or another bin before the later rain is put in your bin.
Coveinr the bin with something will keep out algae spores, bugs, pollen and dust and reduce evaporation.
