College Dorms Safes
Is it safe to have a cat in college dorms?

I have two indoor cats and one of them always runs out of the house whenever the door is open (she got out twice actually). Now that my sis and I are getting closer to college she wants to take BOTH of them when she gets a dorm. I’m concerned because I’ve heard stories about dorm cats that run out and what people do to them and my sister thinks I’m too worried? What do you think? Would our cats (especially the one who loves to run out) be safe in colleges that allow pets?

Your feelings are right on. Cats do not do well in dorms. If they get out it is very difficult to get them back. The territory is unfamiliar and noisy. Not everyone on campus is nice to cats and could harm ur cat if they got hold of it. Cats like familiar surroundings. I hope ur sister uses common sense or ur parents are firm about not letting the cats leave their comfortable familiar surroundings and be thrown into a life where they get lost or killed. Good luck, hope sister doesnt get her way on this one, she needs to think of the cats rather than her own needs. It is scary to leave for college and we often want to take something from home to ease the transition, but it should not be a cat. Take care and thank u for caring, uve got ur head on straight on this matter. She needs to think of what is best for the cats. I work for a cat shelter. Many starving terrified cats are picked up hanging around a local college campus, ANd those are only the ones that survive. It is impossible to trace the owner and the poor cats are in terrible condition.

Packing for College Tip: Things to Not Forget

What you need to pack for college really rests on your needs. But, there are a few items that people may easily forget and that most people will need when packing for college. Now,the owner of BoxBot will walk you through these easily forgettable items.

1) Flip Flops for the Dorm Shower. BoxBot understands the importance of shower safety….that’s right, you may never have felt unsafe showering before, but now you should have some concern. Make sure to pack flip flops for the dorm shower because you do not want to catch some nasty fungus or infection.

2) Winter clothes. If you live far away and will not be travelling home for quite some time, make sure to pack some warm clothes. While at move in it is usually sunny and warm, you may be in for a surprise when it drops 50 degrees outside in late October. Be safe on this one rather than sorry.

3) Sheets that will fit your dorm room bed. A lot of the dorm room beds are “extra long” and require custom sized sheets. There are companies online that can provide you with the proper sheets in multiple styles, like RHL. Find out if you need custom sheets for your dorm bed and get on this so you can pack them up with your other belongings.

4) Laundry Bag. In a lot of dorms, the laundry room will be a good two minute walk from your dorm room or on another floor completely! So, make it easy on yourself and get a laundry bag. BoxBot recommends a laundry bag over a laundry basket because it is lighter, easier to pack, and easier to haul around in the dorms.

5) Robe. While it may be funny to others, walking naked back to your dorm room will probably be really embarrassing for yourself. Make sure to have a robe on hand that can cover you up on your way back from a nice shower.

These things are easily forgettable whenever you are in the hustle and bustle of packing for college. Make sure to write these items down and pack them first to save you embarrassment later on down the road!
