Things to Consider When Picking Toys for Babies
Your new baby needs many things, including wonderful toys from stores like HearthSong and Sensational Beginnings. Safety

When looking for stuffed animals, choose items with eyes, nose and ears made out of stitching as opposed to plastic buttons which can be torn off and put into the mouth.
Stimulation
If a play item does not stimulate your child, chances are pretty good that she will not play with it. You need a toy that captures your child’s attention and encourages thought. Remember that over-stimulation is just as dangerous as under-stimulation. Try to remember that young children, babies especially, are new to the world of the five senses that adults are used to experiencing. Try choosing an object with gentle sounds as opposed to blaring ones, many different textures to create contrast, and lights.
Colors & Contrast
The eyes of babies are still developing for several months before they have reached their full sight potential. Because of this, color combinations with high contrast will make the best play items for your child. Think of combinations like black and white, navy and yellow, or red and white. Traditional pastel colors are actually harder to differentiate to the young eye, and are therefore less interesting. So much development happens in the first year of life alone, it is important to keep updating your toy box with toys that appeal to those changing developmental milestones. You can generally expect to find age guidelines on the box of each toy to let you know which ones are age appropriate. The best way to make your dollar go further is to buy items that change and evolve with your changing child. You’ll know you’ve found a “stages” play item by the age specifications on the box. Keep in mind that these age recommendations are just generalized suggestions and your child may be above or below these outlines depending on her personal development.
