My husband is cutting and drilling through a main support beam is this safe?
We bought an older house and the floor sags .. so my husband has decided to sister the support beams in the basement. He has sawed several cuts into the main support beam and then drilled many hole through the beams and bolted wood on both side of the beam and the boards do not go the length of the beam. Is this safe??
Wow. Ok- definitely ok to sister beam for support. Why he is cutting beam is not clear from ur description. I would worry about that a bit. Also, I would definitely make sure the “sisters” went the length of the beam oR at least as far as u can get.
The main question u should b asking is why did floor sag? Was the beam undersized for load in the first place?
Even with sistering the floor may still continue to sag without adding a Jack pole or some kind of verticle support column. What if the sagging is related to a compromised foundation?
I would have to see to go further, but at least talk to a pro, or at least check load/beam/ span ratings and see what u are up against.
