I am 5’10 194lbs. want to fight mma. can i drop to 155lbs? lightweight?
or is it best to drop to welterweight 170?
ive been training for almost a year now..i plan on fighting in one year from now. i train muay thai, boxing, jiu jitsu and mma lots of cardio.. i feel ready but will give it one more year..is it safe to cut the weight?
im not fat either..ive always been 185 but i recently gained 10 pounds in muscle..it just feels weird cuz the guys in my gym are are way bigger than me and taller at that weight..
There’s a few more pieces of information we’d need to give you a serious answer. What’s your build like? Are you carrying extra weight i.e. fat? Are you stocky? Are you totally shredded? Everyone’s body is built a little bit differently. I used to carry a lot of extra weight around, and although I’ve got a wide frame, I don’t easily pack on tons of muscle. I fought at 170 pounds, but I realized my body is well suited for 155, and I’m working towards fighting at that weight class now. Honestly evaluate yourself. If you can clean up your diet and drop ten pounds (at least), which most people can to be honest, you’d find yourself at around 185 pounds, and that’s not a drastic cut to 170, but 155 is pushing it. If you can shed a lot of weight, and it’s body fat, or your comfortable with changing your strength training program to drop weight, shoot for within 10 pounds of your fight weight. Since you’re just getting started I wouldn’t want to try cutting 15 to 20 pounds your first time out. It sucks. If you can make it to about 165 pounds, 155 is a good option, otherwise opt for MW or WW.
