Why am I so scared of flying to Europe Friday? Shoud I be?
I know airspace is open but there is STILL an ash cloud sitting over Europe. I am going to Amsterdam and I am so nervous. Just because the airlines say it is safe does not mean it is. I really dont think they know if it is but the risk is better than losing over 200million a day. I feel like they are doing this for profits because it was such a rush decision. I hate this feeling. I will have to take a xanax or something. I could cancel for a full refund but I do not want to let family/friends down over there. Dutch are not the most understanding people when you break a “schedule”. Why do i have this irrational fear of the volcano Ash?
Really no need for being scared. The decision to re-open the airspace is not made by the airline companies but it is recommended by Eurocontrol, the European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation, and is executed by the European Governments. The airlines have blamed the Secretaries of Transportation of the European countries for re-opening the airspace that late, however it was not done before test-flights had been done to actually check the exact location, altitude, and most important, the density of the ash clouds. In order to do this aircrafts of the various countries have flown into the ash cloud and have collected material to check the density of the cloud. This was done on Monday and based on the results it was decided to re.open the airspace. The decision was made based on the advise of scientists and engineers who have assessed the safety aspects and not based on the airline companies which act profit-oriented.
