How long can a typical house burn?
I was looking at fireproof safes and wanted to buy one but was curious if the safe or its contents would be destroyed from the heat by the time the house would burn to the ground. The product is a FireKing® Two-Hour Fire And Impact Rated Safe, 2 Adjustable Shelves, 325 Lb., 2.3 Cu. Ft. would it be good enough.
The idea is that the fire department would get the fire out within 2 hours. However, this is not often the case. There are homes that burn for 12 hours or more. It’s just a matter of weighing the odds, and the odds are that they would have the fire out pretty quickly.
I would locate the safe away from walls and other combustible material so it won’t get as hot if a fire does occur. Also, at only 325 lbs, make sure you bolt it to the floor of your house. If you have a concrete slab, have a plumber come in and locate any pipes in the slab (gas lines included) so you don’t accidentally drill into one while anchoring it.
A professional burglar would scream with delight at a 325 lb safe. Just grab a two wheeled dolly and pack up all your valuables and bust it open later.
My gun safe weighs 600 lbs, and it only took two men to move it from the truck to where it’s bolted down in my home.
