Is it safe to cover a floor vent in a room that’s not currently being used?
We have an empty bedroom with a floor vent. Since the room is not being used, there’s really no need to heat it. It stays closed off and people only go in to look for things that are stored in the closet. Is it safe to use a cover to stop heat from pumping out of the vent- or will this cause problems?
Generally speaking there would be no problem.
If you start to detect moisture condensing on the windows or in the corners of the room, you should open the vent back up. You are letting the room get to cold.
If you have AC you should be okay with closing off just one vent. The residential systems aren’t installed to that tight tolerances yet.
You may want to find the balancing damper and shut the branch duct off in the basement instead of at the register. A balancing damper is usually a wing nut with a little handle sticking out of the branch duct. Mark the “open” position with a permanent marker and then turn the handle to perpendicular of the duct.
Even if you shut both the vent damper and the balancing damper some heat will get through and that is okay because you don’t want the room to get that cold.
