airbrush painting safety and questions?

Ive recently gottin into airbrush paiting bought a compresser and air gun kit at harbor fright it is a central pneumatic professional series #95630 I have fooled around with it a little and have found no way of ajusting the spray flow to a more detailed fine line, is this plausable with this gun? Ive allready made several trips back to harbor fright and havent had any luck getting help or answers with questions from them.
Also I am wondering if it is safe to do Airbrush painting indoors?? My GIrlfriend is asthmatic and highly sensitive to some things and Im unsure if this would be problematic, should I be wearing a dust mask or resperator while Im working directly with painting? I will be paiting canveses and latex masks ive sculpted and will be using acrylic paints.
Im also interested if anyone knows what water to paint ratio I should use to thin the mixture? any helpfull links on tips are also welcomed
Thanks.

WOW what a lot of questions…lol

I use a 25litre compressor and a small diaphragm compressor to run either a de vilbis 63e or a commercial spray gun depending on the area I am covering.
I don’t know what you are using as I don’t recognise any of the items nor the store so I suspect you are in USA or OZ maybe.
Any way, to get a fine line you need to reduce the paint flow by moving the needle in and then increase the airflow by increasing the pressure.
It will depend on the nozzle and the needle as to how fine you can go. My 63e will produce a line about the thickness of a felt tip pen but the 63 would go to a pencil line. Neither will do this with my diaphragm compressor because it pulses and doesn’t produce high enough pressure. I use to get round this using a tyre as a reservoir, connect a commercial van T valve to the tyre valve and connect the compressor to one side then the airline to the gun on the other. This allows the pressure to be raised to a the maximum the compressor can yield and gives a steady flow, it also traps some moisture which will also be a problem to you sometimes depending on your compressor. My first compressor was a fridge pump fitted to a lorry tyre in this manner.

Ok health and safety…..

One: pressure leads to explosions, explosions leads to shrapnel and shrapnel hurts, even if it just plastic or rubber. Make sure you have a pressure relief valve in your system, all connections must be suitable for high pressure (not just a rubber pipe shoved over a rigid pipe and clamped with a cable tie…yes people do that) and keep high pressure lines where they can’t suddenly shoot off and fly around like a raging cobra (been there done that).

Two: paint, ink, solvents etc are all different, i.e. water is safe to spray as a mist but a high pressure jet will hurt or even cut.
Read the safety data or ask the manufacturer for the information if it is not on the container.
I prefer to wear a carbon element mask when spraying cellulose and acrylic but for some jobs I may just wear a welding grade disposable filter mask.
I can’t advise where exactly you can check for this information as I don’t know where you are. Try looking in your town for a commercial spray supply outlet. A vehicle body shop may give you advice or a college where they teach body repair.
You can buy whole head masks that blow fine filtered air over the face and keep you protected to a high degree.
This doesn’t help your GF and I don’t think it will go down well if you fit her up with masks every time you spray so consider constructing a spray booth with a shower extractor fan to pull fumes and overspray outside, be careful this doesn’t breach environmental guidelines in your area. You can fit filters. If you want a really efficient booth to work in then have it sealed airtight and then pull fresh air from outside and exhaust it through a filter to the outside.
Otherwise, work in a very well ventilated space and be aware overspray will settle on everything in the area you are painting in and soon you surfaces will take on a lovely rainbow effect that you may love but often bugs the cr@p out of girlfriends for some reason.

Finally, depending on the surface you are spraying onto and the finish you want will mean the dilution of paint will have a bit of a variety, experiment using graduated containers to mix paint in and then you will see what suits what you are doing.
A mix of around 10% water dilutes some acrylic to be suitable for spraying but will depend on the viscosity of the paint you are starting with.

Can’t help with links, but do go talk to commercial body shops as the techniques are the same whatever you are spraying. You may even find a local custom paint shop nearby, look for trucks or bikes with spray jobs and ask the owners for info.

Good luck

Self Defense Weapons And Tips

Self defense has become increasingly important in the world today. There is violence not only in the workplace and in school but even in the home. Rapes, burglaries, robberies, assaults and murders are always present in the evening news and in the daily papers. Learning self defense and having self defense weapons might come in handy. These may even save your life.

There are several self defense weapons widely available in the market. Think about purchasing one to protect yourself. Consider getting a stun gun. This electrical self defense weapon utilizes high voltage to stop an attacker. When the gun comes in contact with the assailant even for just a mere three seconds, he is rendered helpless and incapacitated, allowing you to flee from harm. It is best that you always have your stun gut out or readily accessible.

For maximum effect, the best points of contact are the upper shoulders, the upper hip and below the rib cage. A notable stun gun model is one that fits right over your knuckles. This gives you an easy grip and assures you that it cannot be taken away from you. Some stun guns are disguised as everyday objects such as cigars, soda cans and mobile phones.

Stun guns are easy to conceal and are very effective. However, these are pretty expensive and some states require you to obtain a permit to own and carry a stun gun. Other down sides of this device is that it can only be used in close proximity and can only fire single shots. These will not be very useful in case of multiple attackers.

Another powerful weapon is the Taser. Unlike a stun gun which requires you to make physical contact with your attacker, a Taser will work from up to 15 feet away. Tasers are equipped with a special nitrogen gas cartridge. This cartridge shoots a pair of barbed projectiles at your aggressor.

This device is relatively easy to use. Point the Taser at your assailant’s chest. Before he gets too close to you, fire five-second bursts. Similar to a stun gun, a Taser incapacitates the aggressor and causes involuntary muscle spasms as 50,000 volts of electric current travel over the wires and into the central nervous system of the assailant.

Mace and pepper spray are also solid self defense weapons. A well-placed blast of pepper spray into the eyes of an attacker will cause their mucous membranes to become inflamed and will stop him in his tracks. These devices, although cheap and small, will inflict a great level of pain. They come in the classic tube forms and are camouflaged in usual objects that you carry around on a daily basis such as a lipstick stun gun.

A disadvantage in utilizing Mace and pepper sprays is that the chemicals must be sprayed in the eyes. This is not easy to do especially if the attacker surprises you. Always have these spray bottles in hand as you walk around potentially dangerous areas. It may be difficult to locate in a deep handbag or cluttered pocket.

Aside from these weapons, you can keep you and your family safe by using your head and trusting your instincts. Reduce your risks by being aware of your surroundings and avoiding shortcuts and isolated areas. Walk or hang out in areas that are well lit, open and with lots of people. You may also think about enrolling yourself in a self defense class. Check out your community hospital or community center for classes.
