do i need one in my gun safe?

iv heard alot a of people say that i need a dehumidifier in my gun safe but i can’t really see the need for one. Would much moister get in there anyone wish to in lighten me about it. ps i live in australia on the eastern coast so it gets humard during the summer

I am ex-military and an expert on this.

Unless you live in the desert or near desert conditions – you need an electric dehumidifier if any of the firearms have been fired.

The issue: Just as salt is known to attract moisture (desicants are made of different salts) so does the sulfur based residue left in your barrel after shooting. Even after extensive cleaning – there is still some residue, and, with rifle stored standing up, the oil falls exposing this residue. Once the residue attracts moisture it will form sulfuric acid and the rest process will begin.

Second issue – your firearms inside the safe are going to be colder than the air outside. Just as your cold glass of ice tea attracts moisture on a hot day – so will your firearms when the door is opened.

Last – electricans use a special putty called ‘fire stop’ when running wires and conduit between firewalls. Your safe should have a small hole in the back for the electric cord – once installed – be sure to plug the hole with this red fire stop putty. And, plug the two or more holes that bolt the safe to the floor.

Hope this helps.

How to Select a Gun Safe

The gun safes make use of dehumidifiers in order to prevent the condensation inside the safe. Condensation is the main factor which destroys the guns because it rusts the metal and can cause irremovable moldy stench. The location of the safe and the type of climate are concerning factors because the change of temperature or the areas having higher humidity are more prone to condensation attack inside the safe. So a dehumidifier is needed to prevent it. The dehumidifier helps in avoiding condensation inside the gun safes and essentially on the weapons you place in the safe. The gun safe dehumidifiers are available in two types:

•    Electric dehumidifiers- These dehumidifiers are also known as the golden rod and are the most popular ones. It heats up the safe to about 140 degree of temperature. The reason for keeping this high temperature is to perform evaporation of water content present in the safe thus protecting the safe against condensation. It provides flexible body and thus is good for small spaces. It is easy to install and has removable cords.

•    Desiccant dehumidifiers- These dehumidifiers are basically the sponge which soaks the water inside the safe acting like a magnet to water. This can be placed anywhere for several months. After that it can be made to dry out in oven to make it reusable again. It is useful if you do not have any place to keep safe near electrical outlets. Also in case of power failure, it serves as a good choice.

It is always advisable to make some research before purchasing a gun safe like you do in investing in the stock market so that you dot have regret after the purchase. So pay heed to the label of gun and considers the risk against the cost. It is similar in case like buying any car insurance, the more spend will ensure you of higher security. Going for the cheap design especially when your purchase will not be returned afterwards, may get you into regret.

A gun safe is put under several tests for fire tolerance. The rating of the gun safes also depend on the temperature of fire and the duration of time till which it can bear without causing any harm or damage to the belongings kept in the safe. Therefore do not forget while buying the safe, some important things like the dehumidifier, weight of the safe, size of the safe, type of locking in the safe, cost and finishing in the design of safe and avoid buying gun cabinet.
