Ex roommate left gun. What should I do if I want to keep it or sell in?
I have an ex roommate who fell off the face of the earth. He’s still alive because he keeps getting mail delivered to the house from child support services. He just straight up left all his stuff behind, including a 22 caliber handgun. It’s been 6 months now so it’s safe to say he’s not coming back. What should I do with it? I would like to keep it and possibly sell it in the future. I want to make it legal though.
You can take it to law enforcement (assuming you are legally able to own a hand gun in your jurisdiction) and have them do a check on it to see if its been reported lost or stolen. Just tell them its abandoned by your former roommate.
You can then just keep it, or register it if that’s what is required in your town.
If they give you anything showing that its NOT stolen, then keep that – just in case its reported stolen later.
PS – Unload, open the cylinder or lock back the slide and transport the gun in a closed case to the police station. Call ahead and ask whom to see and make an appointment.
Please don’t walk in with a gun in your pocket or hand.
