Question about anti-aircraft gun fire?
Okay, I have what may be a dumb question about anti-aircraft fire: In footage I’ve seen (WWII footage, mostly), there are “puffs” of smoke from the fire. Are these the points where the shells have exploded, despite not having hit anything (yet)? Are the shells designed to explode after just a certain amount of time, or only after they’ve hit something? If someone in a plane sees the puff of smoke below them, does that mean that that particular shell just didn’t hit them and they’re safe or does that shell continue on up? Thanks.
It is almost impossible to put a projectile into a target flying very fast and a few kilometers high. So the anti-aircraft shells are fused for detonation in case an impact does not occur. The shrapnel resulting from the detonation occupy a larger area and also possesses high kinetic energy (by that time the forward velocity of the shell would have been very low). So an exploding shell has a better lethal radius and hence a better chance of destroying a target.
The fuses can be barometric, time delay or proximity. In case of the first two, the gunnery team tweaks the fuse to adjust for the intruder’s altitude.
A puff of smoke below them means that the shell detonated upon reaching the desired height, you are flying higher. The gunners would be frantically readjusting the fuses then. You are safe if the height difference puts you out of the shrapnel’s lethal sphere.
