Best home-defense pistol for me?

I am looking to buy a handgun to protect my home, kept in a small safe I have of course. The electronic keypad allows to me to open it quickly, but keep it out of unwanted hands.

Now, to my question. Here is what I am looking for in a gun…

~Not too big, something a tad smaller then a 92FS if possible.
~Extremely reliable
~American made if possible?
~Something without too much kickback, that you can fire with one hand comfortably if possible.
~Something with 15-20 rounds or more (no extended mag, needs to be fully in the grip).
~I am open to a .45, but it seems a bit large for my taste. a 9mm would be okay? Open to suggestions
~Not too expensive. Something in the 200-300$ range if possible.
~And lastly, something that is easily maintained

Please post pictures of the gun you recommend, I am a novice user. I know how to shoot and work a gun, go to the range a bit. I don’t need to be a sharpshooter, just need something to defend the ole’ house. Thanks y’all! =)

I would look at a Baby Desert Eagle. It is actually very similar to the Beretta in its lay out as far as where the safety, mag release and trigger are located and how they work and correlate to each other. It is good quality, features a safety that is easy and fast to operate, and has high capacity magazines when chambered in 9mm. It also is chambered in .40 S&W( which is a good middle ground between .45 and 9, as far as power goes) and in .45ACP. The mag. capacity goes as follows: 9mm-15 rounds, .40 S&W- 13 rounds, .45 ACP- 10 rounds.

Before I go on, someone asked why you would ever need high capacity magazines….Where I live I have seen 10-15 guys gang up on 1 person, and I’ve had 5 guys with shotguns and pistols on my doorstep, trying to break in to my home at 2AM. So having a couple high capacity mags is an excellent idea….better to have a little more than you will ever need than run out in an emergency situation. Also, a revolver takes a lot longer to reload than a semi-auto and it has to be reloaded a lot more often.

As I was saying…I own a Baby Eagle in 9mm and it is amazing. It is made by IWI, the same company that designed the famous Desert Eagle, for use by the Israeli military. All steel frame, solid, compact, and accurate. The safety on it is made so that, when you engage the safety, it will lower, or decock, the hammer and disconnect the firing pin so that it is imposable for the gun to fire. As complicated as that may sound, all it takes to go from safe to fire mode is one flick of a switch. It is just as reliable, if not more so, than most guns made in the states. The recoil, or kick, is negligible at worst in 9mm and .40 because the heavy steal frame absorbs so much of the kick. I have not tried it in .45 yet but I would expect it would be the same story. I fire my 9mm with one hand at the range often, and as long as I don’t anticipate the shot, my arm dose not move at all. You will not believe how ergonomic they are! Before you buy just go down to a gun shop and ask to hold one to get the feel of it. Also, it is insanely easy to clean, oil and maintain.

The Baby Eagle is relatively inexpensive, $500 new, tho the web page says $559, I payed $500 flat for my new one. If you find it used it will obviously be cheaper, and would probably fall into your price range. I would try GunBroker.com. It is a web page for privet owners to sell guns online.Used Baby Eagles are hard to come by in your local gun shops but on the web page you can buy from all over the country. They will send it to the local gun store of your choice so you can fill out all the paperwork, and they have great deals. I saw some on there for around $200-300.

One last thing. When using a pistol for self and/ or home defense it is important to buy ammunition that will do the job it was designed to do, stop the bad guy. I would recommend Federal Hydrashock ammunition or Winchester Ranger ammunition. Both have a great track record with law enforcement for not only their stopping power but for staying in the target instead of going through and potentially harming or killing someone behind the bad guy.

Digital Safe Locks – Forgotten Your Code?

Virtually all-modern safes have replaced dial locks with electronic keypad-entry locks. While it features more reliable, tamper-proof and burglar-proof locks, it is easy to use, along with its keypad number entry combination locks that makes it more secure as well. For one thing, it automatically goes into its lockdown mode, which means that it goes idle for 5 minutes. Aside from its great strength and security, it is also nice-looking; who wouldn’t want one of those modern James-Bond-technology inspired security gadgets installed in their homes?

While digital safe locks present a highly secure gadget, it also has its downsides. For one, it operates on power or batteries, which typically last up to one year. While battery recharge or replacement is expensive, it requires a certain amount of money for maintenance. Also, if the owner has pressed the wrong lock combination, they will have to wait 5 minutes to try pressing down the correct combination code. However, more difficulties or problems will be faced by the owner if the digital lock combination has been forgotten.

What should I do if I forgot my combo code?

• First, you need to remain calm so you can easily and clearly think of the many ways to solve the problem; take deep breaths.

• For some digital lock safe models, changing the number lock combo is easy. Instructions are provided on the user’s notes or owner’s manual that usually comes with the product when purchased. Consider using the defaults to crack the code.

• Some digital lock safes may have been provided with notes, manuals and papers; their manufacturer’s websites filled with helpful instructions, documents and papers; however, this poses a problem on which one to choose. Simply read through everything that you can find, to eventually find the solution to your problem.

• You haven’t found any piece of useful paper of your digital safe’s package; try reporting your problem to the manufacturer. You can contact manufacturers at their website or local offices. Send in a request for a tool key or a set of instructions on how to change your currently forgotten combination lock. While they do not keep records of safe combinations, they are the best group to consult on how to crack their own security codes.

• An alternative would be having the safe serviced by a qualified technician, the one that specifically fixes digital lock safes of the same brand.

In case of a lockdown due to forgotten digital lock code, many would give an advice to try remembering the other digits in the lock code and filling it in with random numbers. With dial locked safes, this method of cracking the code could work. However, the heightened security features of digital lock safes eliminate or do not support random entry of lock codes. Some brands may even have designed their digital lock safes to block all random combination entries after several attempts, for security reasons, unless serviced by the manufacturer.

The difficulties brought by forgotten digital lock codes emphasize the importance of using codes that you can be easily remembered. If you have difficulty retaining number codes, make use of numbers that mean something personally to you. Arrange it in a sequence that creates a pattern that rhythmically allows your mind to remember the code when needed.
