Ithaca Model 37 Fthrlght has “Full” stamped on the barrel, can i safely shoot slugs with it?
I own a Ithaca Model 37 Featherlight (Mid 70′s I believe) It has “Full” stamped right on the barrel (low and right of the other stamped print) I believe that means Full Choke. My brother states he has crushed deer with this using slugs…? A) is that safe?….B) will this damage the gun? It was handed down when my father passed and I really don’t want it to blow up in my face and also would like to preserve the gun as a sentimental piece. Achem…but I will shoot it for the right purpose..;)
Rifled lead slugs are safe in modern shotguns and shouldn’t cause damage to any modern shotgun with a non-removable choke. Some much older “full choke” shotguns were choked much tighter than a modern “full” and it would be inadvisable to shoot slugs through them. Accuracy with slugs in a full choke shotgun is unlikely to be very good.
Sabot slugs (the kind intended for rifled barrels) should not be used and there have been some reports of incidents when using slugs with removable/interchangeable/adjustable chokes.
