Someone that has been to Russia please…?
So I’m going to Moscow and St. Petersburg with my family this summer (we’re russian by heritage) and I wanted to hear some people’s experience with the country. I’ve heard two different impressions of Russia, one is that everyone is friendly and it is safe and relatively clean in the major cities. And then I have heard that everyone is rude to Americans, it’s not safe, most people don’t know english, and there are machine guns on every corner. Both are from people that have been there but what they told me is so different! SO if someone could tell me what it’s ACTUALLY like, and if it is safe, that would help me out a lot ![]()
Also we’re hiring a guide and translator, do you think that’s necessary?
Russia has its share of idiots (you can meet some of them on yahoo answers), but so does every country out there. Overall, I think that Russians like America and Americans (although it is probably more of my opinion). You probably should avoid talking politics to people, as whatever opinion you have it is most likely based on what you hear about Russia in the States and most of what you hear in the States about Russia is not true.
English is going to be a problem indeed, as not many people speak it at the level at which they can easily communicate with you. I do not think that you need both a guide and a translator though (unless you are very wealthy and have no other thing to spend your money on I would not suggest you hiring two people). In fact you can find someone for very little money or even for free (as there are people who might be interested in practicing their English with you, although it is difficult to do it from the states). Well, actually, finding a good person who speaks the language could save you money (you know, someone who could tell you what stores to shop in and stuff), but finding good people is usually a matter of luck everywhere.
The Machine guns on every corner is obviously a joke, unless the person who told you that visited Northern Caucasus (Chechya and the nearby regions). Moscow, I believe, is particularly safe. S-P is ok.
