.44 Rem. Mag. barrel life?
I am going to purchase a Ruger Super Redhawk, used for $200. Because of the price of the particular firearm, and the strong reputation of the Redhawks, I can’t pass it up. Now the guy I am purchasing it from has had it sitting in his gun safe for 3 years, and he never even put a single round through it. But, he bought it used and was informed by the guy he bought it from that he loved shooting it, and shot it quite a bit. I was wondering how many rounds a revolver like that could tolerate before I would notice decreased accuracy? Also, being that it was shot so much, what signs could I look for in the barrel that could possibly show significant wear ? Also, any input on the Super Redhawk or personal experience would be appreciated. Thanks.
I own a few Ruger Super Blackhawks and super red hawks. Two of them have been shot every week for many decades. I reload my own ammo and I know that I must have shot at least 1,200 rounds a year. So that adds up to over 10,000 rounds and the bores still look fine. What take the beating is the forceing cone and top strap.
Look under the top strap next to the barrel for wear. Here is a photo of this;

See how the top strap is being etched by gas pressure? That’s how you tell if its been shot a lot. It wears there far faster than the barrel. A steady diet of hot 44 mag ammo will wear the top strap down faster than light target ammo.
If its wore down some there don’t sweat it but if its really deep I would pass on buying it. Another thing to check is the chambers with a caliper. If they are swollen badly that’s a sure sign of many very hot rounds fired through it.
Price sounds too good to be true so I would go over it very thoroughly.
