Can my full choke barrel handle steel shot?
I have a Remington 870 2 -3/4″ 12 gauge shot gun with a full choke non-riffled barrel. I will be using it for waterfoul and i am wondering if it is safe to use with steel shot (size 2-6)
Bear in mind that I’m not a duck or goose hunter, but it is my understanding that more open chokes are commonly used.
For another thing, with the 2 3/4″ chamber, I’d say your M-870 is an older gun. As a general rule, it is said that steel shot is rough on older guns.
I’d suggest you get another barrel with either a more open choke, such as Modified, or Improved Modified, or get a new barrel with screw-in chokes.
If I’m wrong, you can bet that a real duck hunter will come along and set things straight.
