How to fix a Mosin Nagant 91 30?
I dont know if there is anything wrong with it, but I inspected it and noticed that the front sights where that circle thing is bent. Its supposed to be a full symmetrical circle but it looks bent and warped. I want to fire it but Im not sure if it will be safe because it is so old and I would like to have it checked out before I target practice with it. will that bent front sight ruin the accuracy of shooting the gun? it has dents and scratches but that bent front sight bugs me more for some reason.
I have been shooting and playing with Moisin-Nagants (the name of your rifle) for about 35 years now and, so far, I have needed to get exactly ONE part: a bolt-head for a 1906 rifle. I fitted a new $12 bolt-head, checked the headspace (with rimmed ammo, nowhere nearly as critical as with rimless) and it is now back on the range for the first time since the Winter War.
These are an EXTREMELY rugged and reliable rifle, but most Americans don’t really understand them. They are rough and they are simple and you have to operate them solidly to make the controlled-round magazine feed properly. But they will WORK in 50-below temperatures and they will WORK in 110 above and there are VERY few rifles that you can say THAT for.
You CAN make one really shoot if you understand what you are doing. When you fire the thing, do NOT rest the slender fore-arm on anything. If you have to have a rest, you rest the FULL portion of the stock and your accuracy will be better. For BEST accuracy, try shooting with the bayonet attached: this is how they were sighted-in at the factory.
Are they any good, accuracy-wise? I don’t know what YOUR standards might be but, for me, any 80-year-old rifle with iron sights that shoots into a QUARTER at 100 yards…. withOUT a scope… is okay.
Handloading your ammo will REALLY show you what the rifle can do. Surplus ammo mostly is old machine-gun junk that is outdated for military use; it is sold cheap because the Russians want RID of it. The are replacing it with fresh ammo of the same size…. because it still is a fine cartridge, putting out MORE power than the fabled .308 Winchester and doing it at lower pressures to boot.
Front sight hood? No problem. Ignore it. Go shooting. Have fun.
