Tips for Moving a Gun Safe
Gun safes can be just as dangerous as the weapons which they are designed to contain and as such, they should be treated with caution. They are extremely heavy and are intended to be left in place once they have been moved. If you are getting your first gun safe or need to move your safe to a new location, you need to be very careful about things. Failing to take the proper precautions and have the necessary equipment to move a gun safe can mean severe injuries or even fatalities. Even moving one of these safes from one room to another can be very difficult and cause back and neck strain; and if you need to move them downstairs or upstairs, the dangers are compounded further.
To move a gun safe correctly, you need to first look at the facts of the situation. If yours is a free standing tall safe, then you probably will need to hire a professional to handle moving the safe. While you may want to call some friends over and save yourself a little money, you will pay a lot more in the end if you or one of your friends is injured in the process! Freestanding safes can weigh several hundred pounds – but if you think that you are up to the job and can do it safely, the following steps will help.
Start by taking everything out of the safe. It will reduce the weight a little and of course, prevent accidental discharge of any weapons in the safe. You should also make sure that you have all of the equipment you need before you start to speed things along.
Find out how the safe is secured to the floor; you will probably need tools to unbolt the safe (make sure to keep them somewhere that they won’t be lost). Don’t try to pick up a safe and carry it, even with help – this is what hand trucks are for. Make sure you have plenty of straps to secure the safe to the hand truck as well and that the truck is rated for weights at least as heavy as your safe. There is no need to court additional danger by having a hand truck which could break during the move. A skid rail is a must-have feature on your hand truck if you need to move your safe upstairs or downstairs, having large tires on the truck will also help with this.
Even if your safe is small, always have another person there to assist you. You may need help getting your safe through doorways, up and down stairs and of course, being there to help in case something goes wrong. You should also have someone help anytime you need to move your gun safe upstairs or downstairs. Remember to go slow and be very careful. You may want to use a dolly rather than a hand truck as well so you can strap the safe down securely using ratcheting straps and use the dolly’s four wheels to move it instead of wrestling with a hand truck.
When moving a gun safe from one home or business to another, you should rent a truck which has a hydraulic tail gate lift. This is a much safer way to get gun safes in or out of a truck than lifting it, even with the help of a few strong people. A helpful tip is to know in advance where are you going to place the gun safe
Wearing protective gloves and footwear are a must. Well fitting steel toed shoes or boots will help to protect your feet and well designed gloves will both protect your hands and ensure a proper grip on the safe while moving it. Make sure to measure any doorways and stairwells you will need to get the safe through to ensure that it will fit – and if there is one available, take the elevator when moving your gun safe from floor to floor. With the proper precautions, moving a gun safe can be done without putting you at risk of harm.
