When considering getting a firearm for self-defense, the first decision will be the type of firearm. Consider a handgun, a rifle or a shotgun. For most self-defense situations, a rifle is not the weapon of choice since it is generally too long and too bulky to use in close quarters. While a handgun and a shotgun can both function well as self-defense weapons, the shotgun is generally the more popular choice for a variety of reasons.
First of all, shotguns are usually more affordable than handguns of comparable quality. They are also generally more available than most handguns and are also legal for the civilian market in more states than handguns. Shotguns are commonly not as heavily regulated as handguns are. With the combination of affordability and availability, more people are apt to go for a shotgun rather than a handgun for a self-defense firearm.
Another reason why shotguns are preferred for self-defense is that handguns are usually inherently underpowered. Though handguns have the advantage of portability and are more easily concealed, shotguns are far more powerful. Shotguns are also perceived as more intimidating. For a self-defense weapon, this is very valuable, if we consider that the threat of being shot is usually enough to stop a crime in progress.
Because of the spread of the shot, the average shooter can engage multiple targets faster with a shotgun than with a handgun. However, given that self-defense situations usually happen in close quarters, the spread of a shotgun’s shot isn’t likely to expand by more than a few centimeters. This still holds an advantage in taking down an assailant since the shot will still spread further after hitting the target. This causes more damage which lends more stopping power. A spread shot that is fired in close range is also more likely to result in a disabling wound than a shot fired from a rifle or a pistol.
A shotgun is also safer to use in a populated structure like a house or an apartment since it won’t penetrate the wall as readily as a round from a handgun or a rifle. This makes it less likely for a shot to go through the walls and hurt innocent bystanders or neighbors.
Before purchasing a shotgun, you should be aware that shotguns are generally heavier and larger and aren’t as easy to maneuver as a handgun in close quarters. That being said, shotguns are considered to be excellent for close range use and continue to grow more popular as a self-defense firearm.

Ascertain What Your Target is and What’s Beyond it
Always make sure of your target and what may be beyond the path of your shot. You cannot dictate the path of the shot once it has been fired. Always make sure that upon taking the shot no person or object will be injured or damaged. The safety of others comes before everything else; if you are unsure of what you are shooting at then take your time in determining what it is or do not take the shot at all.
Keep in mind that certain types of ammunition may have varying travel distances. Take this into account as the bullet may miss the intended target and/or ricochet in another direction.
Use Appropriate Ammo
Take responsibility when using all types of ammunition for your gun. Take time to read and understand all warnings and instructions which appear in the manual and on ammo cases/boxes.
If the wrong type of ammunition is loaded into an unsuitable firearm then malfunction and serious injury may result. Improper loading may completely destroy a gun and render it useless. As always, take your time in confirming that the ammo loaded matches the gun’s specifications found within the manual and manufacturer’s markings.
If ammo has become excessively wet or has been submerged in water it should be discarded of properly. Refrain from applying lubricants such as oil or solvents on ammunition as damage to the firearm may result.
Examine closely any and all ammunition which you load into your gun. Do not use damaged and poor quality ammo; the savings are not worth possible injury and a destroyed firearm.
Handle the Gun with Extreme Caution if it Fails to Fire
In the instance that a cartridge does not fire at all upon pulling of the trigger, keep the muzzle of the gun pointed away and at a safe direction. While maintaining a safe distance between your face and the breech, open the action carefully and remove the cartridge in question properly.
Always remember to keep the gun pointed in a safe direction in the event of a malfunction. Whenever there is a cartridge loaded in the chamber always remember that it could discharge at any time even if you’ve already pulled the trigger.
If you handle or fire guns in areas with inadequate ventilation, you may be exposed to harmful substances. Lead is a substance known to cause harm to reproductive health and cause bodily injury. Stay within an area with proper ventilation at all times and wash any exposed areas which may have come in contact with ammo discharge.
