WHY BURGLARS HATE LIBERTY GUN SAFES?
Safes In The Movies
Safes have fascinated people because of the treasures that they contain. Hollywood has fueled our fantasies with movies that romanticized audacious and wily safecrackers. Bruce Willis fought them in Die Hard 1. Ocean’s 11 portrayed them as a sophisticated bunch with an elaborate plan. The Italian Job made it look like the toughest safes are no match to the smartest thieves. In real life things are not as glamorous, but the threat is as real. A gun safe, one of the items any firearm bearer needs to have, happens to be not only great protection for their guns, but for other valuables as well. In the next paragraphs, we will learn why a Liberty Gun Safe is a tough one for any burglar, glamorous or not.
Certified Safe
In the real world, gun safes, specifically Liberty gun safes, are a tough nut to crack. Burglars hate them for their impregnable design and construction. This is not surprising because Liberty pours its resources to constantly improve its safes’ burglary protection features. They are also subjected to intense testing by Underwriters Laboratories, an independent organization that sets the worldwide standard for security and whose certification is the ultimate seal of toughness and reliability. The UL mark on a Liberty gun safe signifies two things. It is a warning to safecrackers and an assurance for its owner.
Four Attacks: The Ultimate Tests
The world’s most knowledgeable safecrackers don’t rob banks but work for Underwriters Laboratories. Liberty Safes hires them not just to test but to attack its safes and subject them to the worst possible torture. UL technicians use power saws, cutting torches, crowbars, wrenches, jackhammers, chisels, even nitroglycerin to try and breach the safes’ security features. Liberty even provided the safes’ blueprints so UL can try to find and concentrate on their weakest points.
Four grueling tests were performed by the UL on Liberty safes within a set period of time:
1. The lock’s combination tumblers were drilled to simulate dialing and attempt to unlock the safe.
2. The dial was pried off and the lock’s tumblers were knocked out through the back plate to let the locking bolt retract.
3. The handle shaft was punched in to push out the cam/gear mechanism and bypass the lock.
4. A hole was cut in the side of the safe’s body to side punch the locking bolts and break the locking mechanism.
Liberty safes absorbed every conceivable attack that a determined if desperate thief could resort to. In the end, Liberty triumphed and every one of its models earned UL’s coveted Residential Security Container (RSC) Certification.
Top 10 Security Features That Make a Safe Stand Out
Liberty gun safes pass the toughest tests and enjoy very high trust ratings because of its proven security features:
1. Uni-body construction. A unique 2-piece roll form construction ensures that there are no seams on the front and sides of the top which is the most vulnerable place for prying or breaking. The back is robotically welded to the body to resist bending, prying, splitting, cutting, and distortion. The uni-body bends with more accuracy and tighter tolerances for more consistent performance.
2. Composite door. One sheet of steel is laser and punch cut then folded by a robotic arm. Insulation is installed between the outer and inside steel shells. A composite door has thicker edges making it tougher to pry.
3. Internal hinges. Liberty’s ball bearing-operated hinges are located inside the safe and fully welded to the body. Inside hinges prevent a safecracker from cutting, tampering, or torching them off. They provide added resistance against prying or bending of the door and act as an automatic door stop to protect against wall damage.
4. UL- listed mechanical, electronic, or biometric locks. Liberty gun safes provide three door lock options, each one coming from Sargent & Greenleaf and certified by Underwriters Laboratories. The mechanical lock has an internal relocker that locks up the last tumbler when tampered with drilling or torching; other safe companies have no such security feature. Electronic locks can be accessed quickly, have multiple user capability, and allow a change in the combination at any time. Biometric clocks have a unique fingerprint technology and can be opened just by placing a finger on the reader.
5. Hardplate lock protectors. Heat-treated processed steel hardplates are either triple layered or ball bearing. They are placed in front of the lock to protect the mechanism from drilling or punching. Liberty’s triple-layered hardplate was so tough, a UL tester couldn’t even penetrate the second layer!
6. Locking mechanism. Liberty gun safes have three types of door locking mechanisms. First is the direct drive cam mechanism on entry level safes that provides direct connection from the mechanism to the door bolts. Second is the DX-90 Monster-Mech, an over-center cam mechanism with a unique dead lock; system that takes off the pressure from the locking bolt and provides better protection against side-bolt punching. Third is the GX-480 Monster-Mech, Liberty’s best mechanism with a gear-drive feature that prevents side-bolt punching and provides smoother operation. All of Liberty’s locking mechanisms have a slip-clutch feature that keeps the handle from breaking when torqued by a heavy pipe or wrench.
7. Bolt locking system. Active interlocking bolts secure the door to the safe’s body. Bolts are also thicker and longer, and many are located on the sides of the door making it tougher to bend when pried. Easy Glide bolt protectors also enable the locking bolts to smoothly glide in and out of the door.
8. Relocker devices. Liberty gun safes have an internal relocker which keeps the locking bolt from retracting when a safecracker tries to torch the lock or knock off its back plate. A second relocker is added outside of the lock where it fires to permanently lock up the safe’s mechanism if the back plate is punched off.
9. Anti-pry tabs and security door adjusters. Reinforced brackets triple a Liberty safe’s protection against pry attacks. Security door adjusters increase the door’s tightness to prevent wedging and prying.
10. Suretight handle with Slip Clutch. They protect the locking mechanism by slipping when a thief tries to torque the handle with a pipe. A front locking bolt makes sure that the handle remains super tight.
We know this is all very technical but we still wanted to put it out because it is one of the ways a customer can realize about the immense effort Liberty Safe does to offer a product of quality. When it is about protecting firearms having a safe that can withstand burglary and fire provides peace of mind.

Understanding Ul Testing of a Sentry Fire Gun Safe
How much fire protection do you need for your Sentry fire gun safe? And what do all those ratings mean anyhow? All Sentry safes undergo UL fire testing. This means that safes are tested by the independent Underwriters Laboratory. One very important thing to realize is that you want a safe that is “UL Listed”. This means that the product has actually passed a UL test. If a product is labeled “Tested to UL Standards” that means that the product has been submitted for testing, but does not mean that it passed the test. All Sentry Fire Safes are subjected to fire by UL for either 1/2, 1 or 2 hours. In order for a safe to earn a UL classification, documents stored inside must remain completely undamaged. Here are some of the different tests that a Sentry Fire Gun Safe may endure.
UL 1/2-Hour Fire Endurance Test - Subjected to temperatures of 1550° F for 1/2 hour, and interior remains below 350° F (necessary to preserve documents).
UL 1/2-Hour Class 125 Test – Subjected to temperatures of 1550° F for 1/2 hour, and interior remains below 125° F and humidity below 80%. This is necessary to protect media files.
UL 1-Hour Fire Endurance Test - Subjected to temperatures of 1700° F for 1 hour, and interior remains below 350° F.
UL 2-Hour Fire Endurance Test – Subjected to temperatures of 1850° F for 2 hours, as well being subjected to a flash fire of 2000° F for 20 minutes without explosion or rupture. The interior remains below 350° F.
UL Explosion Hazard Test - All UL Classified Sentry safes pass an explosion hazard test, as well as being subjected to a flash fire of 2000° F for 20 minutes and do not explode or rupture.
UL Fire-Impact Test – Many Sentry fire Sentry gun safe models also pass a UL Classified Fire-Impact test. In this test, after the safe is heated to 1550° F, it is then dropped 30 feet onto rubble, cooled down, inverted, and then reheated to 1550° F for 1/2 hour. To pass this test, the safe must remain intact and locked with an interior temperature below 350° F.
A Sentry fire gun safe may also have an ETL rating. This means that the safe has undergone independent testing by the firm ETL Semko. ETL Semko verifies that the product complies with the manufacturer’s specifications for fire endurance.
Depending on the model, SentrySafe products can carry the following ETL ratings:
ETL verified 15 ft. Drop Test
ETL verified 1-hour fire protection for CDs, DVDs, USB Drives and Memory Sticks up to 1550° F
ETL Verified 1-hour fire protection for CDs, DVDs, USB Drives and Memory Sticks up to 1700° F
ETL verified for 2-hour fire protection of CDs, DVDs, USB Drives and Memory Sticks up to 1850° F
ETL verified to manufacturer’s fire protection specifications. Up t 1200° F for 30 minutes, interior temperature remain below 350°.
ETL verified to manufacturer’s fire protection specifications. Up t 1400° F for 30 minutes, interior temperature remain below 350°.
So, as you decide which Sentry fire gun safe is best for you, now you will have a better understanding of what the ratings mean on the various Sentry safes available.
