Carrying a firearm on a road trip?
I’m planning on going on a large road trip a year or so from now and was wondering about gun laws.
The trip is planned to start in Texas travel through Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Yukon, Alaska, Washington,Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, and then back to Texas.
What would be safe fire arms to bring on this trip for protection as I plan to travel through some pretty wild areas.
I have a AR-15 but I know better than to bring this along.
I would like to know how do semi-auto hunting shot-guns fair in this trip.
I would much rather carry a hand gun on a trip like this…
But if I could get maybe a list of Firearms that would travel easy through these areas without getting in trouble would be really helpful.
Well you have your work cut out for you. You need to check the laws for each and every state you plan to travel through especially Illinois. I tried to warn a guy I know about that state, he didn’t listen, got caught with an unloaded handgun and did prison time. Seems you have to have some sort of permit to even transport a hand gun through that state, or did have to that was about 12 years ago.
And speaking of handguns you can forget taking one through Canada, not going to happen! And as Master T said you MUST contact Canada ahead of time, have them mail you the paper work, fill it out and mail it to them and then you have to pay to transport long guns through their country. I live in Alaska and can tell you Canada sucks when it comes to transporting guns. They will not allow; what they consider “assault rifles” and hand guns. They will allow sporting guns used for hunting. Bolt action rifles, lever action rifles and some semi-auto rifles are ok. Most shotguns are ok. But they keep changing laws, so again check with them;

As for Alaska; if its legal by the feds its legal in Alaska. In fact Alaska is the most gun friendly state in the USA.
Want a way to bypass Canada to Alaska? Get on the Alaska Marine Highways Ferry in Washington State and transport you and your car to Alaska. By doing so you eliminate driving that long drive through Canada, the bad road conditions, the super high gas prices like $8 to $10 a liter, yes that means in some places about $20 a gallon for gas, especially with the American dollar and you can bring all the guns you want then lock them in your car.
By going on the ferry it takes about 6 days to reach south central Alaska. Along that trip you will get to see everything a person on a huge cruise ship sees; small native villages, glaciers, whales, orcas, harbor dolphin, seals, sea lions, etc etc. A small car or truck and two passengers will cost about $2000 on the ferry (rates from a few years ago). But you save well over 1200 miles of wear and tear on your car, motel costs, gas cost, no broken windows to replace from rocks that Canadian logging trucks throw, no broken headlights from same. You can sleep on the ferry for free or you can rent a cabin. Onboard restaurant on all of them and a wet bar on many of them plus a heated sun deck, restrooms, free movies and you get to meet all sorts of down to earth Alaskans.
