Is it safe to store all your files on an external hard drive instead of on the computer?
From what I’ve read, it seems that external hard drives are safe as long as you don’t keep them connected to your computer all the time. As I understand it, external hard drives are safe from computer crashes and viruses if they aren’t connected to your computer when something goes wrong. If you defrag your external hard drive and scan it for viruses often, is it safe to say that you can save all your documents, pictures, and music solely on your external hard drive and just let your computer worry about running programs?
Yes, in some way it is safe to store files on an external drive, but the main problem of external drives, is when you drop it by accident, mechanical failures occur or data loose, not unless your using a Solid State Harddisk which is immune to shocks. Just use your external harddrive as a backup device or mirror in all your documents on your desktop, at least if your desktop crashes and needs to re-install, you still have data on your external drive.
