can a wife find out if her late husband owned firearms?

friend of mine husband passed away. she knows he owned firearms years ago, but has not seen them in years. assumes they are hidden in the house, somewhere.
I own firearms and I have been looking in her house, have not found them yet. I already checked for gun safes and places where people commonly hide firearms they use. but, he hasnt used them in years. they could be hidden in a wall.
my question is, I know police can trace a firearm by the serial number and I know if I commit a crime, they can see if I ever purchased a firearm,but, is there any way the wife can find out if the husband had purchased, but not sold, any firearms? can local police check for her? can she fill out some form and have the FBI check?
It would be a lot easier if I knew what he owned.
Ct requires registration of all guns, even for private sales.
If the law was followed you can get the info from the Special Licensing and Firearms Unit of the Department of Public Safety.

Most states do not have gun registration. The best ATF can do for police is find who the original dealer sold to, not any transfers after that.unless done by a licensed dealer.
