where is the safest place to park if you have to sleep in your car while driving across the country?
I will be driving alone from North to South (NY- to FL). I might not be able to afford a hotel. If I must sleep in my car, where would be the safest places to park/hide?
1. A hotel or motel parking lot. There will be a lot of cars around but it will be relatively quiet. The only thing that you have to be careful of is night security doing rounds. If you don’t make a scene and are laying down when they come around they probably won’t see you. I would not recommend this but if you are really short on cash you could try to sneak a free continental breakfast….
2. An all-night shopping center such as a 24 hour big box store. Park toward the back but not away from every other car. You might be able to tell where the employees are parking. Park by them.
3. Hospitals are another choice. You could most likely park there without anyone bothering you. You just might be woken up by ambulance sirens during the night.
4. Many states provide rest stops along major highways. These can be a great place to get a few hours of shut eye. There are usually two lanes-one for cars and one for big trucks. Get in the truck lane. Truckers are required by law to rest for so many hours a day so there will probably be some big trucks there.
