How can I determine what amperage the electrical service into a home is?
If there are ten 30 A fuses in the fuse box, is it safe to assume that the service is a 300 A service (I am just choosing these numbers arbitrarily), or would this simply mean that each circuit is capable of 30 A but all ten should not be activated simultaneoulsy?
Each circuit in the panel is designed to trip if the load goes over that amperage for a specific amount of time. They are limited by the main device breaker as to how many amps you can push through them all.
The main service amperage is based on the meter socket first and foremost. That is to say if you are trying to get more amps you must call the power company first. after the meter the line goes to a main panel-usually outside very close to the meter, although sometimes it is in the panel inside. the first connection from the meter is your service main and should have an amperage rating under the cover(note it may also be under the dead front you must be comfortable in removing that or seek an electrician (a union one preferably). The service may anywhere from 50 amps-very tiny house-all the way to even 400amps- such as a mansion. the average will be 100-200amps. you also must note the maximum amount of amps for the actual mains(the breaker cannot just be changed out to get more amps if the bus bar cannot handle it) Also note that there are many code requirements that can allow more total amps in your inside(branch) panel then the main has. This is calculated by the architect engineer or electricians to meet the NEC code.(note a new edition of the code will go in to effect on the first of january 2009) I hope this is all relevant and helpful.
