Insulation around gas lines?

I tore out the drywall to install backer board for a faux brink finish. When I took out the drywall I was sureprised to not find any insation between the outer brick wall and the drywall. The home’s natural gas does run between that space. Is there any reason why there is no insulation between the eterior brick wall and the old dry wall? Also. Am I safe to layer some insulation over the gas line between the interior drywall/backer board?

Mermeliz is on the right tract. Someone may have been cutting corners. However, I just want to recommend that the insulation be pushed behind the pipe, leaving the pipe accessible. If in the future something needs attention, say – a gas leak, the insulation will not hamper you discovering the problem. If the gas line is under the insulation it may trap dangerous levels of gas (in the event of a leak).

You may also want a vapor barrier. Do NOT cover the pipe line with the barrier. It is important that you be able to detect a leak – should one ever occur.

Good luck. Be safe.

:)
