I currently owe back taxes from a former business. I want to buy a home. Can the IRS or NYS take it?
I am currently making payments to New York State but because of the high interest and penalties it Will never be paid off… would my home be safe?
If you owe federal taxes and have a payment plan and keep up on your payments, you are considered in good standing with the IRS. So if you can maintain those payments then you should be fine. If you cannot maintain those payments you are probably better off using what you planned as a down payment and put that towards your taxes owed. It is a better financial decision to probably pay off taxes owed first because the interest on the amount owed in taxes will be more than the interest you are going to be paying on a home loan.
Here is an article on some other options to paying off back taxes outside of just a payment plan. If you are considering buying a home, your financial situation is not likely bad enough to qualify for a tax settlement. One thing you can do as well is when you take out a home loan you can take out enough to cover the taxes owed as well (if possible) then you have your taxes paid off and you are paying the lower monthly interest rate given from your mortgage payments (if you qualify for a decent mortgage rate)
