Will a 130 volt light bulb help my problem and is it safe?
We have a two light bulb fixture in our bathroom that is on a dimmer switch. Both bulbs are 100 watt/120 volt. Depending on where you have the dimmer set the bulbs have a high pitch buzz. I realized that has to do with the vibration of the filaments. I have been told by our electrician that a 130 volt bulb should help to eliminate that problem. I would like a second opinion before I order new light bulbs. Do you think that these bulbs will make a difference and are they safe with the higher voltage? I’m unable to find 130 volt bulbs in the normal hardware stores like Lowe’s, Home Depot or Ace. However I have found several sites online where I can order them. Any thoughts?
(There is nothing wrong with the dimmer.)
That would be perfectly fine to do, and there is no danger. You won’t have any higher voltage, you will still have 120 Volts going to a bulb that is rated at 130 Volts, these bulbs typically last longer and may eliminate some of the noise you are speaking of. And don’t use the energy saver bulbs (compact flourescents) as the one answer stated, they cannot be used on a dimmer switch.
