Is a German Shepherd a good watch dog/family dog?
my husband is about to go on the road welding, and i am looking for a good family watch dog for ma and my 11 month old son. my husband swears by the breed. and which is better a male or female. i dont want an aggressive dog because i have a baby, but i want a dog to keep us safe at night when we are home alone.
I have three shepherds and I can tell you this they are great dogs, they get along with me, my family, even when my cousins come to visit, they are all young, and my girls just herd them around the yard and keep them from fighting.
If you get the dog young or even an older dog with a trusted background, you should be able to trust that it will not be aggressive. When raising a child and a dog together you just need to make sure your child knows the dog is not a play toy but a friend, and the dog will most likely treat him in kind.
My girls protect me with everything they have. When my boyfriends home they are calm and docile and just great to anyone who walks in the house. If I am home alone, they bark, to let me know someone is there, and my two young ones stick by my side while mama sticks by whoever is visiting. She watches them to make sure they do not do anything shady.
I also have three other dogs. But I love my shepherds dearly.
Just remember if this is your first dog, shepherds are loud, stubborn, and prone to getting into trouble if not physically and mentally challenged. They get bored easily, and if the do not think you are in charge it can be a real mess.
As for male or female, I love them both. My females are great with kids, but my past males have been too. It is all what you want. I think the boys tend to be more love bugs while the girls tend to be more distant at times.
