Why not build more jails, after all we are spending more money to keep us in, in safety and them (crims) out. ?
We are spending so much money on security like alarm, grills, special lightings, and gadgets for protection etc to keep us safe in our homes, jailing ourselves, while criminals are allowed to live and move freely to target the next victim. I wouldn’t mind giving all the money that I have spend on securing my home to a fund to build more jails, so that we can go about when and where ever we want more freely!!
More jails are hardly the best way to decrease criminal behavior, though I think we view crime very differently. Crime will never disappear, there will always be more to fill the ranks as you remove others, for certain.
Sure, prison removes people for some time from the streets and the criminal element that location may or may not reinforce, but many prisoners learn more about how to circumvent the law and just how to be bad in general from prisons. I’ve spoken with a prosecutor who calls jail “greystone college” because inmates learn how to be better criminals inside the walls. Take juvenile delinquents–more than half will be arrested within a year of getting out [ACLU]. During the last 2 decades of the 20th century more than 600 state and 50 federal prisons were opened, and the total number of inmates has quadrupled in a little over 20 years–from about half million in 1980 to about 2.1 million in 2003 (C302).
Prisons are extremely expensive to build, maintain, and to house the criminals in them, though we are in an age where this kind of ‘growth market’ and the increasing popularity of privatization are spurring the sort of idea you’re proposing…
Perhaps more $ (not necessarily the money you’ve spent on alarm gizmos) ought to go towards rehabilitation efforts…
