How To Install A Wall Safe

Purchasing a wall safe is a great investment to your home and valuables. Every year millions of dollars in valuables are stolen or damaged in fires and purchasing a security safe is the first step to help safe guard your future in the event of a fire or burglary. If you’ve decided on purchasing a wall safe, there are a few things you need to know before you install it.
Installing a wall safe should be a fairly easy job for most Do-It-Yourself’ers. Sure you could pay a contractor to come out and spend $100+ for someone to do it for your, but we’re going to show you just how easy it is to install a wall safe.
One of the reasons people choose wall safes, is that they can discreetly hide your valuables in the event of a burglary. Burglars often look directly for security safes to see if they can crack them, or carry them out of the house. By discreetly hiding your wall safe, you are ahead of the game when it comes to beating the odds. Carefully decide where you want to place your wall safe. It may be in a common wall behind a piece of art, behind a heavy dresser, under a kitchen counter, or other discreet place. The possibilities are endless, just make sure that you have enough depth in the wall for the safe to sit in once it is mounted. Although all wall safes are different, most models generally are 4-6″ deep.
For the sake of this article we are going to assume you are using the most popular type of wall safe that mounts between common 16″ studs in your wall. The first step is to locate the studs by either knocking on the drywall to locate them, or you can buy a stud finder from a local hardware store. These provide accurate stud locations and are cheap – in fact they generally cost less than $10. Once you’ve located the studs, be careful to make sure there is no electrical wiring or plumbing in between the studs that you would want to avoid.
Next, use the template that came with your wall safe and trace the cutout template with a pencil. Once you’ve traced it, you can use a simple drywall knife to start cutting out the hole for your safe. Drywall knives are specifically designed for projects like this and can allow you to easily create accurate cutouts in your wall. Always be sure to be conservative as it is easy to cut more, than to replace drywall you cut out.
Once the wall has been cut, you can place the safe in to make sure it is a good fit. Once the wall safe fits snug and secure, use the mounting hardware or simple anchoring hardware and begin installing the anchors and screws. If you are using anchors, you may need to mark the mounting marks with a pencil, move the safe, put in the anchors, mount the safe, and then screw in the screws.
Once you have securely mounted the safe, install the flange and make sure it has a snug fit against your wall! Vacuum up any remaining drywall dust and your done!
