If you’ve recently come out of the closet, you are possibly reeling with the sweet feeling of accomplishment and freedom. Congratulations! You have taken a huge step in your life, a step so difficult it often takes many people years, if not a lifetime, to accomplish. You should be extremely proud of yourself. However, now that you’re openly gay, there are some things you should take into consideration, as you take your newly found gay world by storm.
Don’t be a crazy newbie – Now that you’ve entered this fabulous world, I’m sure you want to see and experience everything it has to offer. That’s great. I love your enthusiasm, but you need to take it slow. Newbies tend to be a little bit, to say this politely – insane. You’re excited and you want to do everything, but don’t try to squeeze a lifetime of gayness into your first month as an openly gay person. Take your time. Enjoy what the gay community has to offer, but pace yourself. And try not to get yourself into too much trouble.
Stay single – You are starting a new journey to explore this new world, and a serious relationship should be the last thing on your mind. And let’s face it, you’re not ready anyway. Most gays and lesbians really don’t want to be too emotionally involved with newbies anyway. They are still finding out who they are, and getting accustomed to gay life. Most seasoned gays probably don’t want to deal with the problems of newbies; they’ve been through it before and they’re glad to be done with that phase of their lives. So take this opportunity to be your own person, discover who you really are and what is important to you. And a few months down the road, when the time is right, you might just be able to find someone special whom you can connect with.
Use protection – Do not believe in first timer luck. It doesn’t exist. Don’t be fool into thinking that you won’t be so unlucky to catch STD on your first try. You may perhaps be as pure as the freshly fallen snow, but that doesn’t mean it’s your partner’s first time around the block. Always use protection – Period. You should carry protection around with you at all times. Hey, you never know what could take place, and you don’t want to miss out on an opportunity, or worse, do something reckless, just because you don’t have protection with you. They say being a gay is like a boy scout, always be prepare because you never know what’s coming your way!
Be safe – More than just safe sex, there are a lot of personal safety issues that go along with being gay. First off, there are a lot of aspects of gay life that tend to a bit debaucherous. Sure, we all love to go out clubbing, dancing the night away, sipping on cocktails, or possibly using stronger substances. You need to be careful. It’s a fine line between life of the party and lifetime substance abuser. Have fun, but always in the right way.
