My long term boyfriend and I are trying very hard to not get pregnant for about four more years.
When we have sex, we use condoms every time, but I feel that I should be on my own form of birth control, just to be safe.
Here are some keys to remember:

There are side effects from ALL birth control pills/shots including infertility. A recent study confirmed that women increase the risk of having a first-time heart attack by 30 times when they smoke 25 cigarettes or more a day and take a daily, low-dose birth control pill. I smoke a lot, that is why I never got on the pill.
The Depo-Provera shot… well it can take up to 6 months from the last shot to clear out of your system. It is only about 98% effective. Studies released in 2004 show that Depo Provera is associated with a loss of bone density resulting in an increased risk of osteoporosis. The bone loss appears not to be reversed when the woman goes off Depo Provera. Depo is not recommended for long term use.
If I were you I would just stick with condoms. There are a lot of women who end up having infertility issues and there are too many risks involved. I have never used any kind of birth control other than condoms, so I can’t say what happens from a personal standpoint.
