Van Nuys Robberies: When High Security Locks Can’t Help
As a local Van Nuys locksmith company, we are constantly concerned with the safety and security of the residents and workers in the community. While we can offer the highest quality locksmith services, including rekeying, high security lock installation, and even alarm system installation and repair, there are certain times when our services are simply not enough. Community members need to use their own judgment, otherwise even the most secure locks and surveillance camera systems are of no use. A series of Van Nuys robberies where the suspects impersonated police are good examples of how we can all be more vigilant and careful in the future.
In the spring of 2009, three robbers in their 30′s and 40′s were able to pull of several robberies by pretending to be police officers. According to detectives, the trio of bandits would approach the victim, identifying themselves as undercover narcotic officers. They would ask the victim if he was in possession of illegal drugs and would detain the victim. One suspect would flash a police badge, move inside the home or vehicle, and rob the victim and drive off. All three suspects were from Van Nuys, CA.
It is easy to fall for this scheme, which is why we decided to publish this article and remind the community that they should be better prepared in such situations. If undercover cops approach you, ask to see their badges right away before agreeing to any form of detainment or inspections. They would need a warrant to inspect your property, so keep that in mind and remain calm. If your home has an alarm system or surveillance camera system, you can leverage these security systems to your benefit. Set off your alarm when entering the home and point the to the surveillance camera to remind the impersonators that they are being watched and recorded.
