Have you experienced crime in Latin America?

Hey guys I am just wondering about eperiences of people in Latin America….I read about the crime there and it’s all the worst you can think of…even the airports in some cities are not safe…even if you find nice private transportation you can get robbed on fake police checkpoints.

I am a US citizen and have lived and traveled in Latin America for close to twenty years. If a gringo is victimized in Latin America it makes US national news. If that same person gets mugged or worse in New York City, for example, it doesn’t even make the local paper. Of course there is crime in Latin America, but no worse than what you find in the US. It simply is sensationalized and blown out of proportion by the wire services and all the armchair travelers who don’t have a clue.
