What do you think of a handgun ban in UK?
I am doing a project on gun control in UK and was wandering what do you think of handgun ban. Do you think it makes life safer? reduces crime? violates the right of self-defense? Limits individual freedom? What is more important – safety or liberty? I would especially like to hear from British citizens.
Just to clarify – handguns are already banned in UK (since 1997). So what is your attitude toward this ban?
Gun crime rates haven’t gone down in the slightest since the ban, because the ban only affected licensed gun owners (ie people who obey the laws). Okay so the ban was in response to the Dunblane massacre, but that whole incident could have been avoided if the local police force had done their jobs properly and revoked Thomas Hamilton’s license an siezed his guns long before the killings. It was very much known to the police for many years prior that he was an unstable individual, and the police had received numerous complaints about his indecent behavoir with young children, yet they still let him keep his guns (that would not have happened with todays tighter regulations on licenses, these days a license can be revoked for something as small as speeding fine, and the police will routinely check your mental health records to make sure your are mentally stable)
So yes i would like to see the handgun ban repealed, i would very much like to be able to partake in pistol target shooting, air pistols simply do not cut it unfortunately. The ban was merely a kneejerk reaction to cover up the police forces failing anyway. It has made us no safer because 99% of all gun crime is commited with unlicensed guns, dont you get it yet that licensed gun owners are not the problem. I also find it highly unfair that Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channels Islands all still maintain the right to own handguns, but the rest of the UK is not allowed.
